Exhibition 003: Arvind Talati, a forgotten pioneer of modern Indian architecture.

CEPT Archives

Event

Narratives about modern architecture in India have often overlooked the contribution of many pioneers. As a result, the accounts tend to be simplistic and incomplete. This exhibition is an attempt to fill a gap in history. At one level, it is a valuable archival endeavor, at another, an effort to expand the understanding of modern architecture in India. Arvind Talati’s works show that modern ideas and experience in Corbusier’s office were inspiring and also relevant, but needed to be contextualized and reinvented. Climate and cost mattered to design as much as modern principles and technology. The exhibition has tried not just to display his professional projects but also provide a sense of the time in which Talati was practising. By showcasing his education and training in Corbusier’s office, and his impressive body of work, the exhibition provides a glimpse of the trajectories of his ideas and how they manifested in his buildings.
